RAID Technology:

It is a method that enables the user to assemble a number of hard disks, assemble them into one entity, and convert them from separate disks to one disk with a large storage capacity, where the disks are called in this way the matrix, so one disk is a member of that array. This matrix has certain benefits and methods of organizing and methods of dealing with data in addition to the presence of levels that suit the needs of users of all classes and can be created in Windows Server systems and Linux systems dedicated to servers or with a built-in card that comes with all types of physical servers and network storage media such as SAN-NAS

First, the benefits of RAID technology

Fault-Tolerance

The first benefit of this matrix enables the disks to survive the many problems facing the storage drive, whether it is a mechanical HDD or a solid state SSD during storage.



Performance

The second benefit is the observation of a change in the performance of different storage solutions within the array in the read and write rates compared to the presence of a single disk outside the matrix.



Capacity

 The third benefit is the storage space, which enables you to collect separate disks from small entities into a single entity with a large storage space, which is the main feature that we mentioned earlier.


RAID types and levels:

Before we explain these levels, we should pay attention to the following points:



1- The number of hard disks must be from 2 or more according to the level used, i.e. it cannot be applied to a single hard disk device

2- These disks must be completely equal in sizes and read and write speeds in order not to cause loss of storage space or slowdown in some disks due to the varying speeds

Now we come to explain:

1- Striping or Raid-0 Technology:

It is a technology that requires at least two or more hard disks to divide the written data and information between the two disks equally

The greatest benefit to it in the writing process is that writing is completed on two disks or according to the number of disks used simultaneously, so it is fast and well, but the reading is at a normal speed and for protection, this level does not provide protection in the event of failure or failure of one of the disks

2- Mirroring or Raid-1 Technology:

This technology requires two disks, but in the event that 3 or more disks are used, it is not recommended to use them, and it is preferable to use Raid 10 or Raid 5 instead of it because it will be of high cost.

As it makes an exact copy of the data on the first hard disk on the rest of the hard drives

This level mainly guarantees data loss protection

It provides a failure rate of up to the number of hard disks used, minus one without losing data

But he has a problem with slow writing operations, as they are duplicated on two disks at the same time

And it provides a good speed in reading operations

Note: In this technique 50% of the array's storage volume will be lost

For example, if the array is 1 TB, it cannot be written to more than 512 GB of it due to the mirroring process

3- Parity Technology or Raid-5 Raid-6:

It is a technology that requires at least 3 Raid-5 discs or 4 Raid-6 discs

To demonstrate this technology we will assume 3 tablets and the Raid-5 technology:

This technique works by calculating the data written on the first and second discs and placing the result in a block of data called parity on the third disk.

Raid-5 and Raid-50, which will be explained later, are among the best levels for this technology due to

First: The percentage of loss in the storage volume is the space of one disk that stores the parity value even if the number of disks is more than three

Second: The reading and writing process at this level is relatively fast compared to other levels

Third: It insures that data is not lost in the event that one disk in the array fails

That is, it provides read and write speed with good protection

Fourth: The loss of storage space is only one disk space, that is, in the case of a system of 3 disks, each disk with a capacity of 1 TB can be used for 2 TB of data and the third disk with a capacity of 1 TB will be used to store the parity

Raid-6:

This level works in the same way as Raid-5, but the only difference is that it writes the Parity process twice, so it needs 4 disks 2 to store data and 2 to store the parity value

This causes a loss of storage size of two disks instead of one in the case of Raid-5

But the protection at this level is higher because it guarantees the operation of the array in the event of two hard disks failing

It is slower than Raid-5 due to iterative parity process on two disks



Note that there are old and canceled levels such as Raid-3 that we will not mention that it has become extinct
